The Election of 1860 - Meredith

Description:
The Election of 1860 had an immense impact on the Civil War. The election was between Lincoln and Breckenridge. Lincoln, of course, won the election which outraged the South. In fact, Lincoln wasn't even on the ballots in the South. He won purely on Northern votes which is quite a feat. A few weeks after the election, the South seceded from the Union and the Civil War ensued. Lincoln's victory was the last straw from the South. They were so paranoid that their slaves would be taken away from them that they couldn't handle the risk. Lincoln was not originally planning to remove slavery but after the South demonstrated such a serious act of insubordination that he had no choice but to punish them.

Significance: 
This was the situation that caused the South to secede from the Union. It prompted the Civil War as well as led to the death of Lincoln, the emancipation of slaves, and the loss of an overwhelming number of American citizens.
