1863 - The Emancipation Proclamation - Meredith

Description:
The Emancipation Proclamation was passed by Lincoln. It held that all of the slaves in rebellious states were officially free. The Battle of Antietam is what made the Emancipation Proclamation possible. This proclamation wasn't initially supported by Lincoln's advisors but they saw the genius in it eventually. This executive decision demonstrated the power that Lincoln held.

Significance:
This executive order showed Lincoln's power, enabled freed slaves to fight for their freedom, changed the focus of the war, and also prevented outside forces to get involved in the war. The Emancipation Proclamation was a major step to total freedom and equality in not only race but in gender and religion as well.
