1865 - Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse - Meredith

Description:
Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Grant in the Appomattox Courthouse after the Battle of Appomattox Courthouse. This ended the Civil War, although there were more small skirmishes because it took a while for the news to reach everyone.

Significance:
This ended the Civil War and prompted the Reconstruction and re-admittance of the rebellious states to the Union.
