1820 - Gibbons v. Ogden - Scott

Description

Gibbons v. Ogden was a landmark case in supreme court regarding interstate regulation and travel. The Supreme court ruled in favor of Gibbons, that commercial travel could not be regulated the way it was due to the commerce clause.

Historical Figures


  • Thomas Gibbons - Georgia businessman and politician who had steamboats operating in Ogden's waterways
  • Aaron Ogden - Former business partner with Gibbons who claimed control over the waterway.
Significance

The Supreme Court decided that commerce was classified as more than standard travel. This was quite significant because it dictate the Supreme Courts stance on industry and commerce. It also further drove the point in about the significance of a Supreme Court ruling. 

Artifact

Steamboat Similar to the one used by the businessmen.
