The nullification crisis was a crisis starting from South Carolina deciding that it wanted to ignore the tariff of 1828 on incoming goods. On November 24, 1832 South Carolina passed the ordinance of nullification saying that the law only benefitted the north and destroyed trade and commerce in the United States. The people of South Carolina used documents written by Jefferson and Madison in the previous century to defend their rights as a state. They believed that if a state found a law to be unconstitutional that they could nullify it within their borders. Andrew Jackson passed the Force Bill which allowed him to use soldiers to enforce the tariff. Eventually South Carolina repealed its nullification and tensions died down.
