1820 - Missouri Compromise - Sam

Description

The Missouri Compromise was a response to Missouri being added as a slave state to the union. This threatened to ruin the balance between slave states and free states. Due to this the Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 making it so that for every slave state added, a free state also had to be added. The second part was that there was an imaginary line drawn above Missouri separating the free states in the north and the slave states in the south. This was the law until it was negated in 1854 when it was negated by the Kansas-Nebraska act.

Historical Figures

  • Senator Rufus King
  • Senator William Pinckney
Significance

The Missouri compromise also created tension between the north and the south by legally dividing the customs of the north against the customs of the south. Even though this compromise did help to prevent the north or south from taking over completely it did not help in the long run.
