1786-7 Shays' Rebellion- Meredith

Description:
Shays' Rebellion was a series of protests led by a farmer and soldier named Daniel Shays. These protests were held in Massachusetts. Poor farmers crippled by economic depression were the main participants, or Shaysites, in the protests. The main objectives of the rebellions were to capture an armory as well as to rise up against the vast economic injustices. The rebellion failed but garnered enough attention to force political leaders to hold the Continental Convention. The rebellion is credited with being a history altering event.

Historical Figures:

  • Daniel Shays
  • George Washington
  • Alexander Hamilton
Significance:
Shays' Rebellion prompted major political leaders (such as George Washington and Alexander Hamilton) to come together for the Constitutional Convention, a meeting set to amend the Constitution so the federal government could have more power. By the end, an entirely new Constitution was invented. The new Constitution gave the federal government enough power to staunch any other rebellions that may rise.
