1787- Great Compromise- Meredith

Description:
The Great Compromise was a proposal from Roger Sherman, a delegate from Connecticut, that saved the Constitutional Convention. This proposal combined ideology from the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey plan in order to create a fair amount of representation in Congress.

Historical Figures:

  • Roger Sherman
  • William Paterson
  • James Madison
Significance:
The Great Compromise kept the Constitutional Convention from being paralyzed by indecisive chaos. This Compromise allowed states to be represented both by population and uniformly. Since Congress is bicameral, the compromise simply states that states will receive votes in the House by population and a uniform one vote (which was later changed to two) in the Senate.

Artifact:
The Constitution (which contains the Great Compromise)
