1776 - Declaration of Independence - Sam

Description

The Declaration of Independence was, as its name suggests, the formal declaration to the British government of the independence of the United States from the British Crown. This document, which was written by Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers in Philadelphia and ratified by congress on July 4th 1776, became the reason that many colonists fought in the revolution. This date, July 4th, is now celebrated as the day that America won its independence, even though the war did not end until technically 1783. This document was divided into 5 sections by Jefferson and then eventually reported to the congress of the US on July 4th. The Congress edited the document and then adopted it on July 4th. Some historians believe the the document was not signed until later that year on August 2nd.
