The Kansas-Nebraska act was an act proposed and designed by Stephen A Douglas that proposed having popular sovereignty decide whether a state was free or a slave state. This act passed and overturned the balance that had been set in place since the Missouri compromise that used a latitude line to separate slave and free states. The turmoil that was created from the passing of this act between pro-slavery and anti-slavery figures led to the period of time of political violence called bleeding Kansas.
