1825- John Quincy Adams Becomes President- Meredith

Description:
     John Quincy Adams served as the sixth President of the United States for one term. In the election there was a tie in the electoral college so votes were cast by the House of Representatives. John Quincy Adams was known to be aloof, stubborn, and independent. He didn't secure many allies during his presidency thus his one term rule. Adams supported railroad systems, canals, and roads to connect the country as well as promote scientific advances. His proposals did not gain much popularity and his lack of supporters were evidence of his nonexistent popularity.

Significance: 
     Adams signed the tariff of abominations which put a heavy strain on the country as well as being accused of unfairly earning his position in the corrupt bargain. Although the tariff of abominations was meant to help the north, it did nothing but create turmoil in the south. Adams also introduced the idea for the American System which was later used by erecting roads, canals, and railroads.
