In 1607, John Smith founded the Jamestown settlement under the Virginia Company. The settlers built a fort, and settled in. Problems soon became apparent when the settlers were not able to get enough food and stay nourished. After several missions where the settlement was replenished by settlers and supplies. The colony did not have the returns that the Virginia Company initially anticipating. In the winter of 1609, barely anyone survived due to starvation.
