1539-1543 - Gold Seeking Voyages Led by Coronado - Scott

Description

Francisco Vázquez de Coronado had heard tales of Cíbola, a city of gold, and wanted to find it. Coronado and his commissioner, San Miguel de Culiacán, both invested lots of money in making the trip. Coronado left from Compostela in February 1540. He had a massive group of all sorts sorts of people traveling with him. Coronado landed in Mexican settlement San Miguel de Culiacán before traveling inland. Coronado trekked inland but found no signs of Cíbola. He proceeded to return and depart Culiacán to head. While it turned out Cíbola was just a standard native village, Coronado continued his journey exploring several new places and eventually returned battered and defeated. He eventually became bankrupt, due to investing most of his money in the failed expedition, and was charged with war crimes.

Historical Figures

  • Francisco Vázquez de Coronado - Spanish conquistador, that led failed expedition.
  • Antonio de Mendoza - Moctezuma  - Viceroy of New Spain. He commissioned and invested in Coronado's expedition.
  • Marcos de Niza - Franciscan friar who claimed to have seen golden city, Cíbola.

Significance

Coronado's expedition was one of the largest examples of the failed gold expeditions. He was not the only one searching, and failing. His journey perhaps might be the most known. He was able to discover many areas in the southwestern United States
