The Chicago fire of 1871 killed hundreds to people and destroyed the city of Chicago. The city was abundant with wood building the fire spread extremely quickly. After the fire there were looters throughout and the city was in a disarray. The damages throughout the cities were estimated $200 million.

- Joseph Medill - Mayor elected after the fire who brought in stricter fire codes and regulations.
The fire brought attention the need for fire safety and deterrents. The aftermath of the fire also spurred rebirth efforts which brought an economic boom.
