The Texas Annexation was an event where Texas was added as a state to the United States even after Mexico had warned the US that it would declare war if this happened. In 1835 fighting broke out in Texas between American colonists and Mexico and Texas became an independent state. Later on Texas asked the United States to be added to the union as a state. Mexico warned the United States that if they added Texas then they would declare war. After Texas was added the Mexican American war started over the border of Texas and Mexico.

Significance
Annexation of Texas created some significant problems within the United States. For one the addition of a state below the Missouri Compromise line would upset the 1:1 balance of free and slave states. Also, the annexation of Texas included the annexation of many other states: New Mexico, Nevada, California, Oregon, Utah, Arizona, and Washington. All of these states really upset the balance between slave and free states in the north and south and was a factor that led to the Civil War.
