1636 - Roger Williams founds Providence and Rhode Island - Sam

Description
Roger Williams was an English Protestant theologian who founded the state of Rhode Island. He was banished from Boston because of his views on the separation of church and state and religious tolerance that didn't agree with most other colonists.
Williams and his followers settle on Narragansett Bay on land that they had purchased from the Indians. This was where he formed his own colony on the grounds of religious toleration and separation of the church and the state. This colony became home to many religious minorities such as the Baptists, the Quakers, and the Jews. This wall of separation between the church and the state lived long after Williams, who died in 1683, and influenced the founders of America in the creation of our country.
