1492 - Columbus's First Voyage to America - Scott

Description

In 1492 Christopher Columbus made his first voyage to the new world. While searching for an efficient trade route to Asia. Columbus traveled in 4 ships, The Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. On his journey, he went to the Bahamas, Hispaniola, and Cuba. He was convinced he found Asia when he landed, instead of a new landmass altogether. Columbus made contact with many of the natives and for the most part, they were friendly. Columbus proceded to explore the area. He ended up founding settlement La Navidad. Columbus left 39 men there and sailed home on 1493.

Historical Figures

  • Christopher Columbus - Explorer
  • Queen Isabella - Spanish queen who funded his voyage
  • King John II - Portuguese King who turned down Columbus's request for funding.

Significance

When Columbus found gold in Hispaniola, it sent the message to many potential explorers that the new world he had discovered, was rich with gold. His expedition also kick started the push to settle and conquer the new world. Many consider his voyage to be the start of significant United States history.
